there is no validated method to diagnose sepsis; i.e., that unlike in diabetes, strokes, and bypass surgery, there is no way to reliably quantify the denominator in the SEP-1 quality metric). Instead of clinical micromanagement, in its new form it would incentivize continuous improvement in systemwide operational processes.
