Intensivists are used to managing respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, pulmonary embolism, acute kidney injury, and hemorrhages—sometimes simultaneously. But in people with advanced metastatic cancer, such major acute organ failure is rarely reversible. In a surveyed sample cited by ASCO , no oncologists did so—zero.
