In the late 1990s, iron was the leading cause of poisoning deaths reported to poison control centers for children less than 6 years of age. 7 Workup other than serum iron concentration at 4 hours after ingestion not shown to accurately predict clinical outcomes or severity of toxicity. Antiemetics as needed. 2 L/hr in adults.
