Surgical wound debridement and dressing are performed and the malaria rapid diagnostic test (MRDT) is noted to be positive. Based on available hospital resources, the patient is treated for septic shock secondary to pneumonia and an infected wound using broad-spectrum antibiotics and IV crystalloid fluids.
